Project Goals

Funded by the Association Liaison Office for University Cooperation in Development (ALO), designated as a partnership activity under the auspices of President Clinton's Education for Democracy and Development in Africa (EDDI), the goals of this project were:

  • Provide instructional technology training to faculty and staff of the Faculty of Education, University of Cape Coast (UCC) so that they become supertrainers;
  • Assist the supertrainers as they conduct training sessions for their colleagues and students at UCC, for lecturers in the University College of Education, Winneba (UCEW), and for selected teachers currently serving in schools in Ghana;
  • Establish an Instructional Technology Training Center (ITTC) at UCC;
  • Print manuals and guide books on instructional technology and distribute these to schools in Ghana.

The training was conducted at consortium institutions of the University System of Georgia, led by Kennesaw State University (KSU). Training covered all aspects of IT, from the traditional hands-on activities and use of manipulatives to the latest in computer-assisted multimedia presentation. The strategic objective was to improve the effectiveness of primary education system in Ghana. Results included the upgrading of the pedagogical skills of Ghanaian teachers, transfer of appropriate instructional technology for primary education, human capacity development, and improvement of learning outcomes.

The project was central to the success of the Free, Compulsory, Universal Basic Education (FCUBE) program introduced by the Government of Ghana. UCC is the institution primarily charged with teacher preparation. One area of deficiency in the education program at UCC is the absence of instructional technology training. Under this project, seven institutions in the University System of Georgia (USG) provided training for UCC and University College of Education Winneba (UCEW) faculty and staff to better prepare teachers for Ghanaian schools.

Phase I [November 2000]
First group of eight UCC lecturers trained at Kennesaw State University (KSU), Georgia State University (GSU), Fort Valley State University (FVSU), and Georgia College and State University (GC&SU).

Phase II [March 2001]
Eight supertrainers trained teachers in Ghana, 2 USG trainers supervised the training, ITTC established at UCC.

Phase III [Fall 2001]
Second group of eight supertrainers trained at KSU, University of Georgia (UGA), Savanna State University (SSU), and Valdosta State University (VSU).

Phase IV [Spring 2002]
All sixteen supertrainers trained teachers in Ghana, instructional technology training manual compiled, printed and distributed to schools in Ghana.
