TOPICS FOR PRESENTATION/CONSULTING/PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Graphic Novel: A Tool for English Language Acquisition
The purpose of this presentation (and accompanying small group or individual PD) is to help EL teachers, as well as teachers across content areas who work with non-native speakers, develop strategies on how to use graphic novels as a tool for English language acquisition. Teaching and learning with images help ELLs develop reading/oral language skills through subject matter that is interesting and age-appropriate (topics range from “Lunch Lady” with issues concerning bullying through Holocaust studies with Art Spiegelman’s graphic novel “Maus”). Inferences and connections can be made by ELL students to their own daily lives that text-only cannot provide.

Tales of Student-Centered Education: Experiences Abroad
Worldwide there is a need for critical thinkers and creative problem solvers. The purpose of this presentation (and accompanying small group or individual PD)  is to relate experiences that highlight student voice and choice, research-infused instruction, as well as reinforcing cultural awareness and proficiency. This will be accomplished through discussion, visuals and personal examples of successful cross-cultural interaction student-student, student-teacher, and teacher-teacher.

Creativity as a Disposition of an Effective Learner
Creativity informs divergent thinking that can lead a student to forming multiple solutions to a single problem. Research points to the ability to come up with multiple solutions as one of the skills that the 21stcentury workforce lacks. The purpose of this presentation (and accompanying small group or individual PD)  is to help empower teachers to become curriculum leaders who recognize creativity as a disposition of an effective learner. Discussions will take place concerning what teachers already do in their classrooms to foster creativity. STEAM (an extension of STEM) practices will be considered. These discussions will be informed by arts-based-research in an effort to empower teachers to consider leadership roles in the preparation and implementation of curriculum.

How to Survive and Thrive as an Educator
“New” teachers, 2 to 4 years of experience in the classroom, now know what they do not know through contact with students that has provided context. It is important for these teachers to identify knowledge gaps and learn to apply current research and pedagogy. The purpose of this presentation (and accompanying small group or individual PD) is to help “new” teachers develop strategies, through insight from current research on how to create student-centered curriculum while navigating the ever-changing cultural landscape of their classroom.
