tjp-headshotBackground

I never thought I would be able to study abroad, complete graduate programs, learn different languages, and travel the world. I am orginally from Southern Brazil where I completed my BS in Biology and I embraced research as an undergraduate student working in a marine laboratory. My passion for reserach led me to to pursue a MS in Marine Ecology at CICESE in Mexico and then later a PhD in Entomoly at UC Riverside in the US. During these years, I interacted with many students and professors from different countries and backgrounds, which culturally enriched my overall academic experience. After completing my PhD, I worked as a Postdoctoral Research at UC Riverside (Department of Nematology) and at the University of Georgia (Department of Marine Sciences & Institute of Bioinformatics). In August 2025, I joined the Department of Ecology, Evolution, and Organismal Biology at Kennesaw State University.

Philosophy

I believe that classrooms and labs are spaces where deep and meaningful learning can transform students’ lives. My goal as an instructor and mentor is twofold: (i) to create an environment where students feel safe, supported, and welcomed to share their unique experiences and perspectives; (ii) to spark their curiosity and to develop critical thinking. My view is that, in this bi-directional and collaborative setting, both the students and instructor/mentor should be learning and growing throughout the process. Therefore, I am committed to modeling flexibility, adaptability, continued learning, and open-mindedness for all my students, especially as science advances with new technologies and opportunities.
