Yan Huang

Associate Professor

Dr. Huang joined the Department of Software Engineering and Game meDevelopment in 2019. His research was the first exploration in academia into Personalized Federated Learning (PFL) architecture and aggregation algorithms. His research aimed to realize personalized learning objectives for individual clients while mitigating or eliminating any performance sacrifices experienced by other clients. His contributions in the field have been noteworthy, with his FL research papers gaining acceptance in prestigious journals and amassing over 1100 citations within two years. Beyond his research endeavors, Dr. Huang is committed to advancing STEM education and fostering student success from K-12 to college. As the Principal Investigator (PI) for grants from NSA GenCyber, he led initiatives to develop Virtual Reality (VR) educational games aimed at imparting cybersecurity knowledge to middle school students. Additionally, he has been the lead PI for the National Science Foundation (NSF) awards, overseeing the creation of an extended reality (XR) engineering curriculum enriched with hands-on learning activities that seamlessly integrate software engineering and XR development concepts.

He has published more than 30 papers in remarkable conferences and journals including Neural Networks, IEEE/ACM Transactions on Computational Biology and Bioinformatics, IEEE Internet of Things Journal, IEEE Transactions on Emerging Topics in Computational Intelligence, IEEE International Conference on Communications, IEEE Global Communications Conference, etc. Dr. Huang is/was a TPC member for many conferences, including IEEE GLOBECOM 2020, IEEE Blockchain 2019, COCOA 2019. He is/was Technical Track Chair of CyberSciTech 2021/2020 and Editor of WCMC.
