Study Abroad Program

This fifteen-day summer program is being set up to become a rich and diverse living, educational and cultural experience in Germany, a country that had and continues to have a profound impact on our knowledge and understanding of chemistry and the application of the chemical sciences. Students participating in the program will learn about the history of their chosen field of study as well as the recent technological advances in the field. This program incorporates visits at some of the most prestigious academic and research institutions in Germany (the Humboldt University of Berlin, University of Munich and University of Braunschweig - Institute of Technology) and two chemical companies (Thermo Fisher Scientific - Bremen and Bayer Pharma-Berlin).

In addition, the students will participate in a broad range of cultural activities, including field trips to the German Museum in Munich (the worlds largest museum of technology and science), excursions to cultural sites in Munich, Bremen, Hamburg, and Berlin as well as a six day stay in Braunschweig (Germany's City of Science in 2007). Here the students will have the opportunity to visit and work in different academic research labs and to meet, exchange impressions and discuss topics of common interest with German students. They will also attend lectures and guest lectures. The students will use this opportunity to collect information for their projects whose theme will be decided at the meeting hold before leaving for the study trip.

  Course: Three hours of credit will be given for the elective course, CHEM 3200.  Prerequisites include CHEM3361 or Permission of Instructor. NOTE: All undergraduate students must have and maintain at least a 2.0 GPA to be eligible for this program.

  Program Dates: (subject to slight change) May 7-21, 2012

  Program Cost: *** Tuition is paid separately. Cost is subject to change.***
  The program cost is $3300.00 and includes airfare, accommodations, breakfasts, lectures, tours, all ground transportation and admissions to different cultural venues.

  Housing: Students will stay in shared hotels/hostel rooms with other KSU students.

  Application Deadline: February 1, 2012
  A $300 nonrefundable deposit is due at the time of application.
  The first program installment of $1500 is due by March 1, 2012
  The second program installment of $1500 is due by March 15, 2012.

  What will you do in Germany?

  • Guided tours of Munich, Bremen, Hamburg, Braunschweig and Berlin are provided.
  • Visit the German museum of science and technology.
  • Visit Becks brewery in Bremen.
  • Tour of ThermoFisher Scientific.
  • Visit the port of Hamburg.
  • Attend seminars and do research with graduate students at the Braunschweig University.
  • Visit The Holocaust Memorial and Museums' Island in Berlin.
