Research

Dr. Akintomide (Adewuyi) ’s current research focuses on aging and Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) from a caregiving perspective, leveraging artificial intelligence and virtual reality to improve ADRD caregiving. In 2023, Dr. Xinyue Zhang (KSU) and her co-founded the SmartCare Research Team. She has extensive experience in community participatory research design, mixed-methods design, theoretical framework design for conceptualizing key components and variables, and psychometrics, and psychometrics. Her excellent collaboration skills are evident through her work on other researchers at national and international levels within her research domain.

Current On-going Research Projects

  • AI-DECAVA: Revolutionizing Dementia Caregiving with an AI-Powered Voice Assistant- Awarded by Interdisciplinary Initiatives Seed Grants Program, Kennesaw State University.

Behavioral symptoms such as agitation, aggression, and wandering in individuals with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias can have significant negative impacts. These include increased burden and costs for affected individuals, their families, and society as a whole. Our research aims to develop an artificial intelligence app that provides real-time personalized guidance to informal caregivers for managing these behaviors. This app has the potential to improve caregivers' abilities in managing behavioral symptoms, which can, in turn, reduce caregiver stress, enhance the overall effectiveness of dementia care, and allow individuals with dementia to remain in their familiar home environments. This approach fosters autonomy, maintains social connections, and promotes overall well-being.

  • Dementia Healthcare XR- Awarded by Vertically Integrated Projects Grant Fund, Kennesaw State University:

Our research aims to develop a gamified, extended reality-enabled, self-paced behavioral training application (G-XRBT app) to enhance competence among healthcare students through the combination of Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, and Mixed Reality to provide seamless immersive experiential learning experiences in a virtual environment. The G-XRBT app will simulate care provision interactions with diverse avatars with dementia exhibiting behavior symptoms, offering a realistic and immersive learning environment for undergraduate students across healthcare disciplines. By engaging with scenarios and educational resources within the G-XRBT platform, students will acquire dementia knowledge and improve their skills in managing behavioral symptoms in dementia, ultimately improving quality of life, and reducing caregiver and institutional burdens when providing care as healthcare professionals upon graduation.

  • Health Wellness App for Informal Dementia Caregivers-Awarded by First Year Scholar Research Program Fund, Kennesaw State

    University:

Our research aims to develop a user-friendly mobile app to support informal dementia caregivers in rural areas, addressing their unique wellness challenges. The app will offer essential tools and resources to help them stay well while managing caregiving responsibilities.

Recent Past Research Project

  • Effect of Combining an E-learning Module with Virtual Simulation on Prelicensure Nursing Students’ Knowledge and Attitudes of Dementia Care: A Quasi-Experimental Study: Awarded by National League for Nursing (NLN) foundation and the Edmund J.Y. Pajarillo Research Award, 2022-2023

The study aimed to evaluate the combined effect of an e-learning module with the Virtual Dementia Tour® (VDT®) on prelicensure nursing students' knowledge and attitudes toward person-centered dementia care. The research utilized a crossover, quasi-experimental, multi-site design with a pre-test/post-test approach. The study involved a convenience sample of nursing students from three public universities in the Southeast United States. The study's findings could contribute to expanding the understanding of how virtual pedagogical methods can be utilized to improve dementia care knowledge among pre-licensure nursing students
