By going to the web, reading the newspaper articles give to you and applying information from class, answer the following questions. Answers must be 3-4 typewritten pages, 10-12 font, stapled together. This assignment is due at the beginning of class on 20 October. It is worth 15 points.

 

1) Go to the web site: http://www.prb.org

 

A) Click on: "The World of Child 6 Billion" and read the pages associated with this web-based article.

 Based on what you read, what do they consider the concerns that Child 6 Billion's generation will face? Describe what it is about these 6 issues that are of concern.

 

 B) Go back to the main page and once there, click on : "World Population Beyond 6 Billion". Read this web-based article (all of it). To get to various "chapters", click on the links under the "Table of Contents". Read the "chapters" entitled 'Introduction" through
"Conclusions".

 Based on what you read, answer the following questions:

 

What is meant by the term "demographic transition" and why is this concept important?

 
Summarize (by including numbers) the major changes that have occurred in the worlds populations between the years 1950 and 2000.

 
For the world population, what are their projections for the total population size of the earth in the year 2050? Why are there three different numbers? Why are all of these numbers greater than 6 Billion?
